I-64 Kanawha River Bridges
PROJECT OVERVIEW
High Steel Structures fabricated and delivered 11,575 tons of structural steel for the West Virginia Department of Transportation’s Kanawha River Bridge project. This significant river crossing consists of two three-span steel plate girder bridges, each featuring a 562-foot main span and side spans measuring 380 and 390 feet. At the piers, the spans are joined by 16-foot-deep haunched girders.
The first bridge completed was the Nitro WWI Memorial Bridge, which opened to westbound traffic in October 2022. The second bridge, serving eastbound traffic, replaced the original truss structure known as the Donald M. Legg Memorial Bridge. The new bridge retains the name and introduces a modern plate girder design, now recognized as the longest-span steel plate girder bridge in the United States.
