Summary

The Frederick Douglass-Susan B. Anthony Memorial Bridge (formerly known as the Troup Howell Bridge) carries Interstate 490 over the Genesee River and several city streets and ramps in Rochester New York. The new eight-span structure is 364 m (1,194 ft) long, the centerpiece of which is a 132 m (433 ft) long through arch span crossing the Genesee River.

The Douglass-Anthony Bridge posed technical challenges in all phases of its development, including design, fabrication, shipping and construction. The new bridge is a three-ribbed through arch that was designed as a true, two-hinged arch. The bridge was constructed in stages while maintaining traffic on I-490, a corridor that carries 50,000 vehicles per day. Innovative design solutions allowed for the foundations, the arches, and the floor system to be constructed in stages around portions of the existing bridge.

Structural steel fabrication involved four structures.   The main arch structure, two approach spans on both sides of the arch and a ramp.  A total of 5,163 tons of steel were used for the project, wherein 3,108 tons were for the main arch span. The main arch span steel consisted of 27 box girders for the three rib members and 12 box girders for the Vierendeel type cross bracing members.  The floor system consisted of transverse plate girder floor beams and roadway stringers.

Construction of the $41,000,000 bridge began in 2004 and the bridge was fully opened to traffic in 2007.
