4. How should crossframes be detailed for bridges that incorporate skew and / or curvature and have differential deflection between adjacent girders?

  • All crossframes/diaphragms should be detailed and fabricated to fit in the fully loaded deflected position. This will require the girder webs to be out of plumb in the erected, steel loaded only position.
  • Erection framing plans provided by the fabricator should show the degree of this condition. This will vary with the severity of skew and the magnitude of deflection rotation.
  • Bearings must be designed to accommodate this rotation both longitudinally and transversely.
