3. If welds are required for bearing stiffener to flange in design, how can this be done most economically?

  • Connecting a bearing stiffener to a flange can add cost.

  • If welding is required, mill the stiffener for bearing and design fillet welds.

  • Full penetration welds at this location can create flatness problems, add to NDT cost, and add to handling cost during fabrication.

  • Combining mill to bear and fillet welds allows owner inspectors to check bearing flatness and contact surface prior to fillet welding, and greatly reduces inspection costs and warpage of materials.
