3. If welds are required for bearing stiffener to flange in design, how can this be done most economically?
Connecting a bearing stiffener to a flange can add cost.
If welding is required, mill the stiffener for bearing and design fillet welds.
Full penetration welds at this location can create flatness problems, add to NDT cost, and add to handling cost during fabrication.
Combining mill to bear and fillet welds allows owner inspectors to check bearing flatness and contact surface prior to fillet welding, and greatly reduces inspection costs and warpage of materials.
