Description:
Located in the heart of the
Finger Lakes near Watkins Glen, NY, this new bridge on
Route 14 replaced an existing bridge that
was built in 1931. Chosen after a careful analysis
of the geometry and quality of the rock in the ravine area,
the slant-leg design eliminated the need to place piers
in the water while achieving
equal span lengths.
During the steel erection phase of the project, intricate
temporary supports were needed in order to hold and adjust
the steel legs to the correct profile. High Steel
loaded the members on its trucks in a specific orientation
for erection, and some days as many as 15 girders were needed,
all lined up in the proper sequence.
Resting nearly 100 feet above the streambed below, the
final product is a unique bridge that fits the site functionally
and blends well with the beauty of the surrounding area.
