Project
Description:
High Steel Structures, Inc. was pleased
to take part in the construction of the NHDOT Rte 9 Chesterfield
Arch over the Connecticut River The 426.5-foot long,
50.8-foot wide structure stands alongside an existing
arch bridge built in 1936. The narrower original span,
which is practically identical in design to the new bridge, was
retrofitted as a pedestrian bridge.
High Steel fabricated
eighteen FCM box girders for the job. Their excessive
weight, up to 70,000 pounds each, required that they be
shipped in custom-made lowboy trailers. Erection of this
project was a challenge, work was done off of
barges on both
sides of the river. General Contractor Cianbro Corporation
of Pittsfield
Maine held the components back on each side with the aid
of 110 foot tall tieback towers, and the keystone piece
was set into the center to complete the structure.
