Description:

The viaducts each consist of multiple steel box girders fully composite with a concrete deck. The viaduct over the Saw Mill River Parkway is a 1,025-ft. long, seven span structure. The viaduct over the Bronx River Parkway is a 1,280-ft. long, nine span structure. Each viaduct is supported by six steel trapezoidal box (tub) girders with web depths of 76 inches, and box widths ranging from 11’3" to 12’8". The largest girder pieces weigh 76 tons and measure 156 feet in length.

The two viaduct structures were replaced on a tight schedule with minimal disruption to the Cross Westchester Expressway’s six lanes of traffic. To minimize the project duration, the two bridges were constructed simultaneously in three longitudinal stages. To support the speed of erection, High Steel had as many as 20 trailers lined up at a time, located at several storage locations near the job site.
