Lancaster, Pa. (October 11, 2010) –
On September 23-24, 2010, High Steel Structures Inc. hosted current and future bridge industry professionals with dual full-day events promoting the use of structural steel in bridge design. Engineering students from six area colleges and universities attended Thursday’s Student Steel Day, and over 170 professionals from 50 leading bridge industry companies and organizations attended Friday’s Steel Day Industry Open House.
Both Steel Day events began with two hours of technical presentations and continued at noon with a BBQ picnic. After lunch, guests enjoyed a guided tour of the Lancaster fabrication facilities.
Guest speakers included representatives from the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, The National Steel Bridge Alliance, the design firm Bergmann Associates, and High Steel. Topics included the current state of transportation funding, steel as the sustainable bridge material, the 2009 emergency replacement of Michigan’s 9-Mile Bridge, and efficient steel design and the fabrication process.
With over 300 guests, this year’s event was the largest of the four annual Fall Open House events High Steel has hosted for the industry to date.
Brad Miller, of Mackin Engineering Company visited the High Steel Structures event. He commented, “As a design consultant, it’s an opportunity to visit a local industry operation and get a steel fabricator’s perspective, and also gain knowledge of the processes, economics, and effort that goes into fabricated steel.”
High Steel's Fall Open House is held yearly in conjunction with the American Institute of Steel Construction’s nation-wide SteelDay celebration. This year, more than 8,000 people attended about 200 free events across the U.S. for the AISC's second annual SteelDay, hosted by AISC, its members, and other affiliated organizations.
Next year's Fall Open House is scheduled for late September 2011. Please contact us for more information or to request to be added to the invitation list.
